Sedation and Fear Management

Dr. Matz has been treating patients for more than 25 years with a gentle touch and compassion, but he realizes that is not always enough to overcome the anxiety of dental visits for some. We offer nitrous oxide (happy gas) and oral sedation. Dr. Matz received training and certification through the nationally noted Dental Organization for Oral Conscious Sedation (DOCS) and uses techniques that help fearful patients achieve the dentistry they deserve in a relaxed state of mind.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Is it safe? Will it work for me?  These are some of the most commonly asked questions regarding “Sedation Dentistry”.  To help you and your loved ones decide if this is right for you, we’re going to answer these questions and more.

In short, oral conscious sedation is a pill that is taken when you get to our office that will relax your nervous system so you will feel little discomfort.

When deciding if oral sedation is right for you, you will sit down with Dr. Matz for a thorough consultation to go over your options. If you decide oral sedation is for you, an appointment will be set up to complete your dental work using sedation.

Often times, as the appointment approaches, your anxiety will increase. Because of this, you will be given a pill to take the night before your appointment to help you relax and get a good night’s sleep.

When you arrive at our office, a team member will take your vital signs and continue to monitor them throughout your appointment. You will be given a pill, and we take it from there! You can sit back and relax while waiting for the sedative to kick in. A team member will stay by your side for the entire appointment.

While you may appear to be awake for part of the appointment, the sedative is an amnesiac, which means you will have little or no memory of the experience. This helps Dr. Matz, because you will be responsive during the procedure.

Following the procedure, you will continue to relax for the remainder of the day and into the evening.
